Chapter History
The Xi chapter of Delta Gamma at the University of Michigan was founded in 1885, only the third sorority on Michigan’s campus. Our chapter was founded by Fannie I. Mulliken, Mary E. Thompson, and Clara V. Grover, who became our first chapter president. At this time, there were only seven members in Xi chapter, but that number would grow to over 200 in present our present chapter. In 1889, Xi chapter established the first sorority house in Ann Arbor, at the location on North Street, which would change to 1205 Hill, 1800 Washtenaw, and our present location on Oxford Road. Delta Gamma Xi chapter continued to establish themselves, and they hosted the 7th National Delta Gamma Convention in Ann Arbor in 1891 and the 16th in 1909. Delta Gammas were active on campus, leading in scholarship and participating in extracurricular activities. By the time World War II came around, Xi chapter went above and beyond giving time, money, and energy to the war effort, as six of our members enlisted. “But for all the individualism this generation is seeking, a bond of friendship is needed by everyone and that is what we at Xi have found we offer to each other. We have learned to accept each each person as an individual; be aware of her faults, admire her attributes, and then love her for the friend she is. The friendship we all need and have received from Delta Gamma has guided us through Century One, and it is the one we promise we all have for Century Two.” ~ History of Xi Chapter, 1974
